  4. BBEdit Lite is a freeware derivative of BBEdit 3.5, the popular and
  5. critically acclaimed text editor for programmers, HTML authors,
  6. on-line-service users, and anyone else who needs to edit plain-text
  7. files.
  8.  
  9. BBEdit Lite is shipped with a QuickStart document which describes many
  10. of the application╒s features. Full documentation, as well as a
  11. considerable amount of additional functionality, is available with the
  12. purchase of BBEdit 3.5. See the document ╥How do I order BBEdit 3.5╙ for 
  13. details on obtaining your own copy of BBEdit.

  15. We are committed to providing continued support for BBEdit Lite, in
  16. terms of responding to individual questions and inquiries, as well as in
  17. providing fixes for Lite, and improvements in its functionality. We will
  18. announce any future changes to Lite via the comp.sys.mac.* newsgroups,
  19. as well as by providing information and downloadable versions via our
  20. Web page and ftp site(s). We regret that we cannot offer telephone

  25. Feature Overview
  26. ------- --------

  28. BBEdit Lite offers the following useful functionality:
  29.  
  30. Ñ    Stationery documents. You can create a stationery document with
  31. BBEdit; whenever you open that document with BBEdit, its contents,
  32. format information, and window position will be used to create a new
  33. untitled window. You can also create a ╥global╙ stationery document
  34. which will be used as a template for all new windows.
  35.  
  36. Ñ    Open Several. This variation on the standard ╥Open╔╙ command
  37. enables you to open multiple files at once from multiple locations in
  38. the file system. You can also specify aliases to files, and those
  39. aliases will be resolved all at once. (Hold down the Option key while
  40. pulling down the File menu to see the ╥Open Several╙ command.)
  41.  
  42. Ñ    Powerful multi-file search. BBEdit offers the usual multi-file
  43. search, in which a disk directory is scanned and the files are opened
  44. one at a time; however, BBEdit can also display the search results in a
  45. window for easy browsing (and selected entries in the window can be
  46. opened for display). The search can also be limited to files that are
  47. already opened for editing in BBEdit, or to files which were already
  48. found in a previous multi-file search. BBEdit also offers multi-file
  49. replace capability for automated ╥search and destroy╙ operations.

  51. Ñ    Zero cost. BBEdit Lite is free, with no qualification. It is not
  52. a shareware or commercial product. It is not a demo version, and there
  53. is no expectation that you will buy anything.

  55. BBEdit Lite also offers the following :

  57. Ñ    High quality. BBEdit Lite is based on mature and stable technology;
  58. this technology is the beneficiary of years of in-house and field use
  59. and testing. The commitment to quality and functionality shown in BBEdit
  60. 3.5 is reflected in BBEdit Lite.

  62. Ñ    File size limited only by available memory. BBEdit Lite╒s default
  63. partition size is 640K of RAM. This can be set as low as 450K, to make
  64. BBEdit Lite the ideal constantly-resident editor for small to moderate
  65. tasks, or turned up as high as necessary to edit many large files or
  66. perform large-scale search-and-replace operations. If you╒re running
  67. under System 7.0, BBEdit Lite automatically takes advantage of available
  68. system memory, so that you don╒t have to adjust its partition size to
  69. edit large files.

  71. Ñ    No hard limit on number of files open. The number of files that
  72. BBEdit Lite can have open at once is limited by available memory, and
  73. can be increased or decreased by adjusting  BBEdit Lite╒s partition size
  74. as appropriate.

  76. Ñ    Easy manipulation of multiple files at once. The ╥Open Several╔╙
  77. command makes it possible to open multiple files from different folders
  78. at once, and the Save and Print commands can operate on all open files
  79. at once.

  81. Ñ    Pattern (╥grep╙) searching. Matching patterns can be constructed so
  82. that strings other than exact literal matches can be found and replaced;
  83. for example, converting Pascal comments to C comments, or converting C++
  84. comments to C comments.

  86. Ñ    System 7 awareness. Besides supporting all of the basic System 7
  87. functionality such as 32-bit mode, virtual memory, and the like, BBEdit
  88. also takes advantage of specific System 7 functionality wherever
  89. possible in order to either improve performance or to improve its
  90. appearance. This is done without sacrificing System 6 compatibility.

  114. BBEdit Lite has many of the same capabilities as the commercial BBEdit;
  115. however, the following capabilities of the commercial BBEdit are -not-
  116. present in BBEdit Lite:
  117.     
  118.     -    BBEdit Lite is not Accelerated for Power Macintosh; only
  119.         the text engine is implemented as native PowerPC code.
  120.         In BBEdit 3.5, all core functionality (editing, searching,
  121.         file comparison, and other computationally-intensive operations)
  122.         is cast in native PowerPC code for maximum performance;
  123.         
  124.     -    BBEdit Lite does not support integration with Internet 
  125.         service applications (such as Web browsers and FTP clients)
  126.  
  127.     -    BBEdit Lite is not scriptable;
  128.     
  129.     -    Macintosh Drag and Drop support is not included;
  130.     
  131.     -    Find Differences (comparing files, folders, and projects) is
  132.         not included;
  133.         
  134.     -    QuickSearch (an incremental search facility) is not provided
  135.     
  136.     -    No option for split windows
  137.     
  138.     -    Disk browsers are not included, and you can only have one Search
  139.         Results window open at a time;
  140.         
  141.     -    PopupFuncs¬ technology is not built in (you can, however, obtain
  142.         and install PopupFuncs 2.6 or later into BBEdit Lite);
  143.             
  144.     -    BBEdit Lite cannot open or browse project documents;
  145.     
  146.     -    Integration with THINK C, Symantec C++, CodeWarrior, and
  147.         THINK Reference is not supported;
  148.         
  149.     -    ToolServer is not supported;

  151.     -    The Glossary function is not supported;
  152.  
  153.     -    Marker support is not provided;

  155.     -    BBEdit Lite cannot use extensions which are written specifically
  156.         for use on PowerPC Macs, nor can it use ╘fat╒ extensions (which
  157.         contain both 68K and PowerPC code) written to the BBEdit 3.x
  158.         extension interface.

  160.     -    BBEdit Lite does not support Apple Guide and Balloon Help
  161.         for active assistance in using its capabilities.

  163.     -    BBEdit Lite does not support the PowerTalk mail system;

  165.     -    XTND translation is not supported;

  168. contains a large number of refinements and smaller capabilities
  169. that are not present in BBEdit Lite.

  176. developers, HTML authors, engineers, scientists, telecommunications
  177. users, and anyone else who needs to view, edit and manipulate plain-text

  253. known as ╥freeware╙. There is no registration process, no fee requested
  254. or required, no obligation on your part, and no guilt.

  256. We at Bare Bones Software do not subscribe to the concept of
  257. ╥shareware╙; it has been our direct experience that many people simply
  258. ignore shareware notices. The cost of goods related to distributing
  259. BBEdit Lite is very low, and can be recouped by means other than
  260. (unsuccessfully) trying to shame users into paying some small amount of
  261. money for a program.

  263. We believe that when users of a program make the financial sacrifice to
  264. obtain a piece of software, they should expect, and receive, significant
  265. value added. This is why a commercial distribution of BBEdit 3.5
